Full Moon Poets presents two major poetry slams at the historic La Paloma Theatre each year, one in the summer and one in the winter.  This is the largest venue for Poetry Slams in San Diego county although the Slam event is not limited to San Diego county poets; all poets are invited.

What is a Poetry Slam?

A Poetry Slam is a contest in which poets compete for a first place cash prize as well as second and third place prizes.  The Slam consists of three rounds in which the poet has three minutes to present one of his/her original poems of any style. After the first round, poets with the highest scores move on to round two in which they read another poem.  Then the three poets who emerge with the top scores move on to the final round and must read another poem to determine who will get 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

The audience plays a vital role in the poetry Slam as well.  Slam spectators are encouraged to cheer, clap, jeer and boo at the poets and at the scores earned, the louder the better.

Full Moon Poets Slam Rules

Open to the public and most importantly, open to any and all persons who wish to compete.  Due to time constraints, the first round of the Slam consists of 17 poets.  The doors will open at 6:00 sharp.  All poets waiting will be let in and the doors will close.  In the event that there are more than 17 poets (probable) we will draw names and the first 17 names drawn will compete in the Slam.  Plan to have fun even if you don't get on stage!

Each poet who wishes to participate will need to have 3 original poems to perform for 3 elimination rounds. Poets have three minutes to read or perform an original creation and points will be deducted for exceeding the time limit.  Poets may not use pre-recorded music/instruments, costumes or props.  Poets who have won a prior Slam should not repeat the winning poetry at future Slams. Five judges who have been randomly selected from the audience will score each of the poets on a scale of 1 to 10.  Judges are asked to consider both the performance and the craft of the poem.  The cumulative scores will then be tallied. High and low scores are dropped. A penalty is assessed if the poem goes over the 3 minute limit.

The first place prize is a cash prize donated from the audience and second and third place prizes will be announced at the Slam.

The Slam begins at 7 PM and is free to the public as well as poets. For more information call Danny at ( 760 ) 944-6027.
